US Government Unwittingly Admits Cannabis Kills Cancer

When a group of researchers in the US were commissioned to prove the government’s claim that marijuana has “no medicinal value”, their results ended up discovering differently. In effect, they have unwittingly admitted that cannabis can, indeed, help rid the body of cancerous cells.

While such a statement might first sound like a cruel joke, it becomes quite clear after peering at the written summarythat the federal government is indeed supporting a recent study which has determined marijuana to have the ability to eliminate cancer cells.

Conducted by a team of scientists at St. Goerge’s University of London, the researchers found that the two most common cannaboids in marijauna, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), weakened the ferocity of cancer cells. They also made the cells more susceptible to radiation treatment. The study, which was published last year in the medical journal Molecular Cancer Therapies, goes in-depth to describe the “dramatic reductions” in fatal variations of brain cancer when the specific cannabinoids were used in conjunction with radiation therapy.

“We’ve shown that cannabinoids could play a role in treating one of the most aggressive cancers in adults,” wrote lead researcher Dr. Wai Liu, in a November 2014 op-ed for The Washington Post. “The results are promising… it could provide a way of breaking through glioma [tumors] and saving more lives.”

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recognized or approved the marijuana plant as medicine,” thereport states. “However, scientific study of the chemicals in marijuana, called cannabinoids, has led to two FDA-approved medications that contain cannabinoid chemicals in pill form. Continued research may lead to more medications.”

Such is an interesting statement, especially since marijauna remains listed as a Schedule I dangerous drug under the Controlled Substances Act. This may suggest that reform of federal pot laws might soon be in order, however.

NIDA’s newfound pro-pot position is very intriguing, especially as it follows news of a recent proposal introduced to both Congress and the House of Representatives attempting to legalize medical marijuana on a national level. The bill, which is called the CARERS Act, seeks to downgrade the Schedule I status of marijauna to a government as an accepted form of medicine. In addition, the bill would also remove cannabidiol, the non-intoxicating compound of the pot plant, from the Controlled Substances Act and allow it to be distributed on a state-to-state basis without violating federal statutes.

The truly disheartening aspect of the medical marijauna debate, however, is that while a legion of lawmakers seek to reschedule the plant and leading federal health officials are coming forward in support of the herb as medicine, the process of rescheduling the substance is one that the Obama Administration has the authority to initiate at any time.

It is not uncommon for research to surface unveiling the truth surrounding marijuana an its high-powered abilities to treat a wealth of debilitating health concerns, but it is hot news for the US federal government to support such claims. We’ll see how this affects Uncle Sam’s opinion on marijuana, as well as the public’s stance on its need to be legalized or not in the near future.
