How to Optimize the Health Benefits of Turmeric



You probably know by now that turmeric is one of my favorite herbs to discuss, but I really want to teach people how they can get the most out of turmeric!

There are so many healthy benefits of turmeric, but to ensure that your body is actually taking advantage of them, you must learn how to eat it!


Turmeric is oil soluble, which means that in order for your body to properly absorb its nutrients, you should pair turmeric with organic oil. When I cook with turmeric, I also make sure that I’m cooking with coconut oil or an organic olive oil.

How much turmeric should you eat?

The daily recommended dose of turmeric for adults is about 1 teaspoon, however you have to take this daily or at least 3 times a week for it to have maximum effect on your health.

For the elderly and children under the age of 6 the dose should be cut in half (1/2 teaspoon) and taken once a week at first and then built up to a dosage that is unique to those persons needs. If it causes indigestion or strange reactions then I would consult a physician and stop taking turmeric immediately.

If you want to boost the effects of turmeric then pair it with black pepper! When turmeric and black pepper are ingested together, the black pepper can increase the turmeric’s bioavailability by 2000%.

Extra turmeric tips:

– Don’t take on an empty stomach
– If you have gallstones talk to your doctor before administering turmeric (it increases bile production and might worsen gallstones).
– Do not take with any medicinal blood thinner such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or warfarin because turmeric is also a natural blood thinner!

In what form should you take turmeric?

Some people prefer taking their daily turmeric in warm milk (I’m definitely a supporter of this), however since turmeric is oil soluble, you do have to deal with turmeric clumps in your warm milk.

If you’re opposed to this then turmeric or curcumin (the active ingredient within turmeric) capsules are available at most health food stores. This has never been my favorite turmeric administration because it’s a plant… why not take it in its raw, organic form?

That being said, cooking with turmeric is very popular, especially when sautéing vegetables in combination with black pepper and coconut oil!

I love adding turmeric to:

– Soups
– Stir-fries
– Yogurt
– Fish

The last form that I take turmeric in, which is great for those crazy, hectic, whirlwind mornings, is with a spoonful of coconut oil!

If you don’t have the time to add it to your meal before driving your kids off to baseball practice, or off to school in the morning, then just have a spoonful of coconut oil and turmeric.

Because turmeric is extremely strong and has the capacity to change your health, I highly recommend consulting a naturopath or your family physician before embarking on a turmeric-based diet.
